TAROONA SCHOOL BUSHLAND - INTERPRETIVE PLANT TOTEMS

20 interpretive plant totems have just been installed throughout the schools bushland. Taroona Primary School, with the help of TEN, applied for an NRM grant to fund the production of the totems. It's been a wonderfully collaborative project from start to finish, with grade 3 students conducting two field trips into the bushland to research each plant in small groups and respond with poetry and illustrations. The children's work is complemented by botanical text describing features of each plant. The contributions were then turned into beautiful designs and printed on aluminium plates. Six Grade 10 boys did the hard work of preparing the posts, post hole digging, installing the posts, then adhering the labels.
