The gully at the bottom of Jenkins Street has even been informally named "Passionfruit Gully" by TEN 'in honour' of this mighty invader. For TEN and dedicated adjoining residents, "Passionfruit Gully" has been given attention for almost a decade, attempting to bring the vine under control. This continues to be extremely difficult in such a steep-sided, damp gully. Other Taroona gullies suffer similarly from this weed, especially the Crown Land gully between Karingal Court and northern Flinders Esplanade.
Dispersal: Seeds - spread by birds and animals.
Impact: Smothers all vegetation. Fast growing.
Control: Remove and bag all fruit. Dig out or cut and paint ALL stems. This is very difficult with large infestations. In such situations, it is best to tackle the infestation in narrow strips, advancing from the outside of the infestation, toward the centre.
Safe Alternative: For lovers of passionfruit, the round, purple variety (although not native) is safe to plant.
