Save our native plants

Taroona's bushland, gullies and coastal foreshore support a great diversity of native plants - but many areas are still choked with weeds. Although major progress has been made in the last decade with weed control, there are still many gullies and some foreshore areas overtaken by weeds. Here are some of the ways you can help control weeds:

  • Remove all environmental weeds from your garden and encourage your friends and neighbours to do the same. Cotoneaster, boneseed, mirror bush, periwinkle, sweet valerian and briar rose are common Taroona weeds. Check the "Weeds" section of our website for a complete list of Taroona's worst weeds.
  • Don't dump garden rubbish in Taroona's bushland, gullies or foreshore areas. Dumped garden rubbish is the primary source of weed infestation.
  • Plant local natives in your garden. Some mainland natives become bushland invaders, such as Grevillea rosmarinifolia.
  • Be careful when purchasing plants for your garden. Some plant nurseries still sell species which are environmental weeds, such as canary broom.
  • Remove a weed each time you go for a walk, but avoid areas prone to erosion.
  • Come to TEN's working bees!
