Taroona is home to several threatened species, including the Eastern Barred Bandicoot
, Forty Spotted Pardalote and Swift Parrot. There are only about 1000 breeding pairs of Swift Parrot left in the world. Taroona is a favourite habitat because of the availability of nectar and nesting hollows in our mature Blue Gums and Black Gums.
How you can help:
- Plant local natives in your garden to provide food and habitat for wildlife. Eastern Barred Bandicoots prefer dense, spiky bushes or tussock grasses.
- Keep old trees, especially blue gums and black gums that contain hollows.
- Don't let your cat and dog roam at night. Cats are natural hunters.
- Keep your dog off the beach, particularly when birds are breeding between September and March. Little Pengins nest along the Taroona foreshore.
