Protect our wildlife

Taroona is home to several threatened species, including the Eastern Barred BandicootEatern Barred Bandicoot, Forty Spotted Pardalote and Swift Parrot. There are only about 1000 breeding pairs of Swift Parrot left in the world. Taroona is a favourite habitat because of the availability of nectar and nesting hollows in our mature Blue Gums and Black Gums.

How you can help:

  • Plant local natives in your garden to provide food and habitat for wildlife. Eastern Barred Bandicoots prefer dense, spiky bushes or tussock grasses.
  • Keep old trees, especially blue gums and black gums that contain hollows.
  • Don't let your cat and dog roam at night. Cats are natural hunters.
  • Keep your dog off the beach, particularly when birds are breeding between September and March. Little Pengins nest along the Taroona foreshore.
